Greece has become the first country to deploy a dedicated constellation of firefighting satellites, introducing a new system designed to detect wildfires quickly and improve emergency response. Four nanosatellites launched into low Earth orbit are now fully operational, using thermal sensors and artificial intelligence to identify fires as small as four metres across, far earlier than many conventional satellites. When a fire is detected, emergency services receive immediate information about its location, size and intensity, helping commanders decide how best to deploy crews and equipment. The system also provides regular updates and predictive models showing how fires are likely to spread, particularly in remote forests and national parks where outbreaks may otherwise go unnoticed. AI filters out false alarms from other heat sources, improving accuracy. Funded by the EU, the €200 million programme is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, strengthening Greece’s preparedness for increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
