Human rights advocates are expressing concern that the EU has set an unfortunate example by holding discussions with the Taliban about returning failed asylum seekers to Afghanistan. The meeting was held to discuss possible cooperation on deportations, even though the EU does not formally recognise the Taliban government. While no agreement was announced, the talks have prompted criticism from campaigners who fear they could legitimise a regime accused of widespread human rights abuses, particularly against women and girls. UK ministers say they are monitoring developments but maintain that protection will continue for those facing danger, while those able to return safely may be required to do so. Afghan activists, who feel that conditions in Afghanistan remain unsafe, have warned that deportations could place returnees at risk of persecution, detention, or worse. They also fear that greater international engagement without meaningful conditions may strengthen the Taliban’s position and undermine efforts to defend fundamental human rights.
