Residents on both sides of the Gibraltar–Spain frontier are welcoming the planned removal of border controls, ending more than a century of physical separation. The agreement, negotiated by the UK and the EU following Brexit, is expected to allow easier movement between Gibraltar and the neighbouring Spanish town of La Línea de la Concepción. Around 15,000 Spanish workers cross the frontier each day, often facing lengthy delays during peak hours. Many local people believe the change will strengthen long-standing social and economic ties. While Gibraltar enjoys one of the world's highest per-capita incomes, nearby communities in southern Spain experience high unemployment and depend heavily on trade with the British territory. Local leaders hope freer movement will encourage economic growth and foster closer cooperation after years of uncertainty over Gibraltar’s future relationship with Spain.
