German investigators say they have uncovered evidence suggesting the fatal attack at Berlin Pride was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIL). Prosecutors report that a video found on the suspect’s mobile phone appears to show him pledging allegiance to the terrorist group shortly before the attack. The incident claimed the life of a 65-year-old Polish woman and left 31 others injured when a vehicle was driven into crowds attending the event. After the crash, the suspect allegedly attacked police officers with a bladed weapon before being shot dead. Investigators also discovered material at his home indicating links to ISIL. The 21-year-old German citizen, whose family has Lebanese roots, had previously travelled to Lebanon in an attempt to reach Syria and join the terrorist organisation. He had recently received a suspended sentence for planning a serious act of violence. Authorities continue to examine digital evidence as they seek to understand the extent of his extremist connections and any wider security implications.
