Cyprus: search for wreckage of capsized ferry, twenty still missing

A specialist Turkish naval team has begun searching deep waters for the wreckage of a ferry which capsized off northern Cyprus, leaving twenty people missing. At least eight people died after the twin-hulled vessel began taking in water and overturned shortly after leaving Kyrenia on 30 August with 267 passengers and crew aboard. Survivors clung to sections of the overturned hull until rescue boats arrived, while children are among those still unaccounted for. The Turkish navy vessel is using a remotely operated vehicle to locate the wreck, which is about four nautical miles offshore at a depth of approximately 500 metres. Once found, salvage, search and investigative operations are expected to begin. The cause remains unknown, although authorities say the ferry possessed a valid seaworthiness certificate. Witnesses reported that the catamaran lurched violently before striking the water and sustaining damage to its bow. Nine people connected with its operations have been remanded in custody, to assist police inquiries.
