More than five hundred French supermarkets have suffered cyberattacks targeting internet-connected refrigeration systems, causing extensive food spoilage and millions of euros in losses. Hackers reportedly accessed equipment remotely, raising refrigerator and freezer temperatures to 50°C overnight, sometimes damaging machinery or causing fires. Investigators believe the attacks exploited vulnerabilities in older refrigeration controllers manufactured by Danish company Danfoss, whose outdated software may have exposed systems to unauthorised access. France’s cybersecurity agency has urged affected businesses to disconnect vulnerable equipment from the internet, restrict access, and install software updates. The incidents highlight growing risks associated with increasingly interconnected food supply chains and essential infrastructure. Cybersecurity experts warn that similar vulnerabilities could threaten hospitals, energy networks and other critical services, potentially causing widespread disruption and financial losses.
