Global Hunger: Praying for Provision

Global Hunger: Praying for Provision

There is encouraging news in the global fight against hunger: global hunger declined for a third consecutive year in 2025. But the progress remains fragile, uneven and far from enough to meet the world's goal of ending hunger.

The latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report estimates that 645 million people - 7.8 percent of the world's population, experienced hunger in 2025. That is almost 14 million fewer people than in 2024 and 43 million fewer than at the 2022 peak.

Yet the global picture is uneven. Africa now has the highest number of hungry people in absolute terms, with approximately 309 million people facing hunger, compared with 292 million in Asia. More than half of Africa's population, 56.6 percent experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025.

The report also highlights the cost of eating well. Around 2.7 billion people worldwide cannot afford a healthy diet, meaning that even where sufficient calories are available, families may struggle to access nutritious food.

Conflict remains one of the major drivers of hunger. Sudan, Gaza and South Sudan continue to face severe food insecurity, while disruption to energy and fertiliser supplies can create further pressure on food production and prices. The report warns that the current Middle East conflict could affect future hunger projections through higher energy and fertiliser costs.

There is, however, genuine reason for thanksgiving. The decline in global hunger demonstrates that progress is possible. Targeted investment, stronger food systems, social protection and effective action can make a difference.

For Christians, this is also a reminder of our calling to care for those who lack daily provision. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to remember the poor, feed the hungry and demonstrate compassion through practical action.

Churches and Christian ministries around the world are already doing this, from local food programmes to emergency relief and agricultural initiatives. The Church can continue to be part of the answer while praying for the deeper causes of hunger to be addressed.

As we look at the global food situation, let us give thanks for progress while remembering those who remain vulnerable. May God provide daily bread, strengthen those serving communities in need and awaken His Church to generous compassion.

Prayer Response

1. Pray for Daily Provision

Lord, provide daily bread for families facing hunger. Strengthen farmers and communities and make nutritious food accessible to children and vulnerable people everywhere. “Give us today our daily bread.”  Matthew 6:11

2. Pray for Compassion

Father, bless churches and organisations feeding the hungry. Supply resources, open doors for service and multiply every act of generosity offered in Your name. “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

3. Pray for Food Security

Lord, bring peace and stability to nations where conflict drives hunger, restoring livelihoods and enabling families to provide sustainably for themselves and their children. “For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”  Psalm 107:9

Summary Prayer

Lord, thank You for progress against hunger. Continue providing daily bread, strengthen those serving vulnerable communities, restore livelihoods and awaken Your Church to reflect Your generous heart. Amen
