Sudan continues to face one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with war driving mass displacement, hunger and growing insecurity across the country. The crisis is shifting geographically as fighting and displacement intensify in Kordofan and Darfur.
The World Food Programme warns that almost 19.5 million people face crisis levels of hunger across Sudan, with some already experiencing catastrophic conditions and several areas still at risk of famine. An estimated 825,000 children under five are expected to suffer severe acute malnutrition during 2026.
The city of El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan, has become a major destination for people fleeing violence elsewhere. More than 100,000 displaced people are now in and around the city, adding enormous pressure to food, water, shelter and other essential services. Humanitarian agencies warn that the city's resources are struggling to keep pace with the growing number of families arriving.
The crisis is particularly devastating for children. Families who have already been displaced repeatedly are arriving with few possessions, while disrupted agricultural production and restricted humanitarian access make it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs.
Violence is also continuing to affect civilian communities. The United Nations has warned of escalating violence in North Kordofan, while attacks on markets and populated areas have caused further civilian casualties. The combination of conflict, hunger and displacement leaves vulnerable communities with very little opportunity to recover.
Yet amid the suffering, Sudan's people continue to show remarkable resilience. Humanitarian workers, local communities and churches are serving people in circumstances where resources are scarce and danger remains high. For Christians, this is a significant opportunity to demonstrate the compassion of Christ through practical care and faithful presence.
Sudan also needs sustained international attention. Humanitarian funding remains under pressure, while the scale of need continues to grow. The country cannot simply become yesterday's headline while families remain displaced and children face hunger.
The global Church is called to remember Sudan before God, asking Him to stop the violence, provide for those facing hunger, protect displaced families and strengthen believers who are serving in the midst of immense suffering.
Prayer Response
1. Pray for Peace in Sudan
Lord, bring an end to the violence tearing Sudan apart. Turn hearts from destruction toward reconciliation, protect civilians, and establish peace that allows families and communities to rebuild. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.” Psalm 46:9
2. Pray for the Displaced
Father, provide food, clean water, shelter and protection for displaced families, especially children and vulnerable people facing hunger, insecurity and the loss of their homes. “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families.” Psalm 68:5–6
3. Pray for Sudan’s Church
God of order, strengthen Sudanese believers and ministries serving amid suffering. Give them courage, endurance and opportunities to reveal Christ’s compassion to their communities. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Summary Prayer
Father, remember Sudan in Your mercy. Stop the violence, feed the hungry, shelter the displaced and strengthen Your Church to carry the hope and compassion of Jesus. Amen
