Blackpool-born missionary Duncan Dyason faced death three times in Guatemala City when a gangster repeatedly pulled a gun on him — only for it to jam on each occasion. When the man finally confronted Dyason and said he intended to kill him, the missionary calmly asked for just one minute. In that time he shared how a personal encounter with God had transformed his life, bringing him peace and purpose, and how that had drawn him to Guatemala to care for street children trapped in poverty, violence, and abuse. The gangster visibly softened. Placing his hand on Dyason’s shoulder, he promised to protect him rather than harm him, saying: 'Now I know why my gun failed. It is because God is with you’. Dyason’s own faith journey began at twenty-one when, suicidal and searching, he cried out to God and received a life-changing answer. Later, he smuggled Bibles behind the Iron Curtain with Brother Andrew before following a calling to become 'a father to the fatherless' among Guatemala City’s vulnerable street children.
