USA gives $2bn to Christian humanitarian groups

The Trump administration has announced nearly $2 billion in funding for faith-based and community organisations providing healthcare and disaster relief internationally. Christian agencies including World Vision, Compassion International, and Samaritan’s Purse are among the recipients, with funding intended to strengthen hospitals, clinics, community health programmes and emergency responses across dozens of countries. $1.4 billion will support faith and community healthcare providers, which in some nations operate more than 40% of medical facilities. World Vision and local partners could receive up to $850 million over five years to strengthen 2,500 healthcare facilities and support more than 30,000 community health workers. A further $538 million will support disaster relief through Samaritan’s Purse and a consortium of Christian organisations, potentially reaching seven million people across 16 emergencies. Critics have questioned the emphasis on religious organisations and restrictions surrounding abortion-related services. At the same time, supporters argue that Christian agencies combine trusted local relationships, extensive experience and effective frontline delivery to reach vulnerable communities.
