Florida pastor Billy Cerveny has shared a powerful message of hope for people struggling with addiction, emphasising how brokenness can open hearts to the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. Speaking with Tucker Carlson, Cerveny said many people approaching his church are not seeking abstract theology but freedom from addictions destroying their lives. He particularly values friendships with people recovering through Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, saying their experiences often strip away self-righteousness and reveal their deep need for grace. Cerveny believes churches should become 'hospitals, not showcases', where people can confess struggles without fear of rejection and experience loving Christian community. He described shame as a major driver of addiction, creating cycles of isolation and destructive behaviour. However, when sin and brokenness are brought into the light among compassionate believers, shame can lose its power. Cerveny pointed to Christ, who bore humanity’s sin and shame on the cross, declaring that God can redeem even our darkest experiences and transform places of greatest failure into testimonies of His restoring power.
