Southeast Asia: digital doors open the Gospel for islanders

Missionaries serving remote island communities across Southeast Asia are discovering new opportunities to share Jesus through social media and digital evangelism. International Mission Board missionary Amanda Clarkston, who has served in the region for 33 years, says traditional approaches involving village gatherings and personal conversations have become increasingly challenging. Many islanders come from animistic backgrounds and are hesitant to discuss spiritual matters openly, particularly with foreigners. However, widespread smartphone ownership is creating fresh opportunities, even in isolated communities where people sometimes climb hills to obtain internet reception. Mission teams are producing Gospel-focused videos, advertisements and other online resources that people can explore privately. Those interested can respond through messaging platforms, connecting with local Christians or missionaries who offer prayer, answer questions and build relationships. One young woman recently told missionaries she had already heard about Jesus through an online video. The teams hope these digital encounters will lead to personal faith, meaningful discipleship and new Christian communities among previously unreached island populations.
