The Church of England has appointed two bishops to lead the next stage of discussions surrounding same-sex blessings and the status of clergy in same-sex marriages. The move follows the conclusion of the Living in Love and Faith (LLF) programme, a nine-year process examining sexuality, relationships, marriage, and gender identity within the Church. Tricia Hillas, Bishop of Sodor and Man, will chair a working group considering legal and canonical questions surrounding Prayers of Love and Faith and the possibility of standalone services for same-sex couples. Meanwhile, Philip Mounstephen, Bishop of Winchester, will lead a pastoral consultative group tasked with advising bishops on individual cases and encouraging consistency in pastoral practice. The groups will also explore what changes would be required before clergy in same-sex marriages could be licensed or ordained. Significant differences of conviction remain across the CofE, making the process both sensitive and closely watched. Church leaders have expressed hope that the discussions will be conducted with integrity, care, and a commitment to seeking God’s guidance for the future.
