A preliminary investigation into the fatal train crash near Bedford has revealed that the driver of a moving East Midlands Railway train passed a red signal shortly before colliding with a stationary train on 19 June. The driver, 60-year-old Shaun Burton, died at the scene, while 162 people were injured, including more than 100 who required hospital treatment. Investigators found that the stationary train had stopped unexpectedly after a fault with its automatic warning system triggered its brakes. This caused the signal behind it to change automatically to red. Data from the moving train shows its brakes were applied nine seconds before impact, reducing its speed significantly before the collision. Investigators are now examining the visibility of the signal, the performance of warning systems, and whether additional safety technology could have prevented the accident. Rail unions have questioned why an automatic train protection system was not installed at the location. The full investigation is expected to explore all factors contributing to one of Britain’s most serious rail incidents in recent years. See
