June's temperature record set to be broken again

The UK has experienced its hottest June temperatures on record, with a provisional high of 36.1°C recorded on 24 June in Gosport, Hampshire, and forecasters warning that temperatures could climb even higher before the heatwave ends. Large parts of England and Wales have been placed under red and amber extreme heat warnings as authorities warn of health risks, travel disruption, and pressure on public services. Temperatures are forecast to reach 37 to 38°C in some areas, while thunderstorms and localised flash flooding could accompany the change in weather. The Met Office says the heat has been driven by a persistent high-pressure system, often described as a 'heat dome', affecting much of Europe. Although cooler conditions are expected to arrive over the weekend, scientists warn that climate change is increasing the likelihood of more frequent and intense heatwaves. If current warming trends continue, temperatures exceeding 40°C could become increasingly common in Britain during the coming decades.
