UK commits £752 million Ukraine aid package funded by frozen Russian assets

Britain has announced a £752 million military aid package for Ukraine, including 150,000 drones and more than 350 air defence missiles and radar systems, all to be delivered by the end of 2026. Defence secretary Dan Jarvis announced the commitment at a meeting in Brussels of NATO and the Ukraine Defence Contact Group. In an unusual financial arrangement, the entire package is funded through a G7 loan to Ukraine backed by proceeds from frozen Russian sovereign assets, meaning Russia’s own wealth is being used to fund its opponent’s defences. The package follows UK announcements at the G7 summit, including £210 million to support Ukraine’s nuclear energy infrastructure and 70 new sanctions targeting Russia’s shadow fleet. The drones will be manufactured within Ukraine, boosting local industry alongside military capability. Air defence missiles and ground-based radar systems will help protect civilian infrastructure against Russia’s intensifying nightly barrages.
