The Government has announced plans to criminalise conversion therapy, with proposed penalties of up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine. The legislation would formally define abusive conversion practices and introduce protection orders for those believed to be at risk. The Evangelical Alliance has described the proposals as deeply concerning, warning they risk criminalising parents, church leaders, and all who hold a biblically orthodox view of sexuality and gender. The Alliance fully supports protection against coercive and harmful practices but argues the legislation goes far beyond addressing abuse and could significantly curtail religious freedom. Christian Concern’s Andrea Williams told the BBC the law would have a ‘chilling impact’ on therapists and religious leaders supporting people with questions about their sex or gender. Faith minister Nesil Caliskan has given the ban her full backing, stating it would protect LGBTQ+ people from harm. Widespread public consultation on the proposals is expected later in the year.
