A Russian frigate has carried out a live-fire exercise in international waters approximately forty nautical miles south of Plymouth while under close surveillance by the Royal Navy. The frigate Neustrashimy, part of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, informed HMS Tyne of its intention to conduct the exercise before requesting the British patrol vessel to withdraw to a safer distance. French military aircraft also monitored the incident and sought clarification from the Russian crew. The exercise follows a series of recent confrontations involving Russian naval vessels and so-called 'shadow fleet' ships operating near UK waters. Defence analysts say these activities form part of Russia’s ongoing efforts to test Western responses and gather intelligence without crossing into direct conflict. The incident has renewed discussion about Britain’s maritime security, with calls for continued investment in naval capabilities and measures to counter hostile activity around critical national infrastructure and shipping routes. The Royal Navy continues to monitor Russian naval movements closely while maintaining a measured and professional response.
