Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Britain’s nuclear submarine programme, describing it as vital for both national security and long-term economic growth. During a visit to Barrow-in-Furness, where the next generation of Dreadnought-class submarines is under construction, Burnham highlighted an £8.4 billion investment already supporting the programme’s next phase. The project will replace the UK’s ageing Vanguard-class submarines and forms part of a wider defence programme expected to sustain around 47,000 jobs, rising to 65,000 by 2030, including thousands of apprenticeships. Burnham said defence spending should strengthen both the nation’s security and opportunities for British workers and industry. However, questions remain over how the government will fund future commitments to increase defence spending, with opposition parties urging greater clarity on long-term military investment. The announcement comes amid heightened international tensions and ongoing debate over balancing defence priorities with wider public spending. Ministers say investment in defence manufacturing will also help regenerate communities and develop valuable engineering skills for future generations.
