Major incident declared after large wildfire breaks out - as UK warned of 'new normal' after drought declared

A major incident has been declared after a large wildfire swept across Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast, as prolonged hot, dry weather continues to fuel dangerous conditions across the UK. Around 90 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the wind-driven blaze, while nearby residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area. The fire erupted just hours after large parts of England, including Suffolk, were officially declared to be in drought following months of exceptionally low rainfall and repeated heatwaves. The Environment Agency warns that water shortages, stressed ecosystems, and increased wildfire risks are likely to continue until substantial rainfall arrives later in the year. Larger wildfires have also affected Scotland and other parts of Europe (especially in France and in Spain), highlighting the growing impact of prolonged dry weather. Ministers say Britain must prepare for this “new normal” as climate patterns become increasingly unpredictable, placing greater pressure on emergency services, agriculture, wildlife, and water supplies.
