Families affected by the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal have reacted with anger after former funeral director Robert Bush issued a written apology following his 20-year prison sentence. Bush admitted 67 offences, including preventing lawful burials, mishandling human remains, and stealing from charities. Police discovered 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes at his funeral premises after concerns were raised in 2024. Many families say the apology has brought little comfort, arguing it focuses more on the consequences for Bush than the suffering caused to grieving relatives. Jasmine Beverley, whose stillborn son’s remains were found nearly two years after his death, said the ordeal had permanently altered her memories of saying goodbye. Other relatives described the letter as insincere and deeply upsetting. The case has profoundly shaken public confidence in the funeral profession and highlighted the lasting emotional trauma caused when families are denied the dignity, respect, and trust they expect in caring for their loved ones.
