Heatwave: UK towns at risk of running out of water within six weeks

Parts of England could face serious water shortages within weeks as prolonged dry weather places increasing pressure on rivers, reservoirs and public supplies. Southern Water has warned that around 165,000 people in Hampshire could experience significant disruption if levels in the River Test continue falling and restrictions prevent further abstraction. The company has applied for government permission to continue taking water from the river and introduce additional restrictions on some businesses. In Norwich, Anglian Water has asked residents to restrict consumption to essential uses because of exceptionally low levels in the River Wensum, while customers in Bournemouth, Kent and Sussex have also been urged to conserve supplies. Nine UK water companies have already introduced hosepipe bans. Households are being encouraged to shorten showers, turn off taps while brushing teeth and reuse suitable household water for plants. Ministers say they are working with water companies, farmers and environmental organisations to secure supplies while limiting damage to already stressed rivers and wildlife. See
