New research suggests prayer is the strongest spiritual motivation drawing young adults to church, with one in three reporting that they attend more frequently than a year ago. The Barna study found that 34% of Gen Z and Millennial adults had increased their church attendance, while 45% reported no change and 21% were attending less often. Prayer was identified by 45% as a reason for attending, followed by worshipping Jesus at 38%. Young men and Black young adults were among those most likely to report increased attendance, both at 41%, while 36% of Hispanic young adults said the same. Researchers also found that women are more likely to value corporate worship and men more likely to mention confessing sin. Barna cautioned against interpreting the findings as evidence of a universal spiritual revival, but said they demonstrate that many young adults are seeking simple, historic expressions of Christianity rather than elaborate programmes or church innovations.
