Scotland: major crackdown on suspected trafficking network

Police Scotland has carried out its largest-ever enforcement operation against suspected human trafficking, with around 300 officers raiding nearly fify locations across Scotland. Thirty-six people were arrested and 13 initially charged during Operation Kendrew, an investigation targeting an alleged Vietnamese organised crime network. Police believe the network may be connected with human trafficking, cannabis production, money laundering, fraud and modern slavery. Investigators say trafficking networks can force vulnerable people to work in cannabis farms, nail salons or prostitution, sometimes after migrants have paid substantial sums for journeys to Britain. The operation was conducted in cooperation with Vietnamese authorities. More than 900 potential victims of modern slavery are referred for support in Scotland each year, with Vietnamese nationals representing the largest overseas group identified. Police are encouraging anyone who suspects exploitation within their community to report their concerns.
