Residents near a chemical factory in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, have been found with unusually high levels of PFOA, a persistent 'forever chemical' linked to increased risks of several serious health conditions. Independent researchers tested 49 residents after previous investigations discovered elevated PFOA levels in local soil, eggs and home-grown vegetables. Using overseas health guidelines, researchers found 70% had concentrations associated with increased health risks, although elevated levels do not mean individuals will necessarily develop illness. PFOA, previously used at the nearby chemical factory to manufacture non-stick coatings, has been banned in the UK since 2020 and is classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organisation. Two local allotments have closed, while residents near the factory have been advised to peel home-grown fruit and vegetables. More than 100 residents are now considering legal action against AGC Chemicals, which says investigations remain ongoing. Researchers are calling for wider testing to establish the scale of contamination, while affected families seek clearer health guidance and appropriate monitoring.
