Andy Burnham has said it is 'possible' that a future Labour manifesto could include another referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU. However, he stressed that holding such a vote now would not be appropriate and said the immediate priority was examining options for improving the UK’s relationship with Europe. These could include maintaining current arrangements, developing closer economic ties or rejoining the EU customs union. Burnham previously promised not to reopen Brexit during his return to Parliament, but now argues that Britain’s present relationship with the EU is 'not good enough'. However, the Conservatives and Reform UK have accused Labour of attempting to reverse the 2016 referendum, while Liberal Democrats and Greens favour closer European integration. Emmanuel Macron and Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez have indicated they would welcome Britain seeking closer ties. Burnham says his government will explore options at a forthcoming UK-EU summit before seeking broader national consensus on Britain’s long-term relationship with Europe.
