The National Crime Agency has seized 25 inflatable 'mega-dinghies' at East Midlands Airport, preventing their suspected use by criminal gangs smuggling migrants across the English Channel. The boats, discovered in a shipment from Turkey to the Netherlands, could have carried approximately 1,700 people. The seizure follows another operation in July when 25 boats and engines were intercepted at Felixstowe. The NCA says international cooperation has helped seize more than 1,600 boats and engines, disrupting trafficking networks and increasing their operating costs. Nearly 19,500 migrants have crossed the Channel this year, 43% fewer than during the equivalent period last year. However, dangerous crossings continue, with two men recently drowning and two women suffering serious burns. Meanwhile, protests erupted in Gosport after around 150 migrants were rescued and brought ashore, resulting in clashes with police and twelve arrests. Authorities face the challenges of balancing border security, preventing exploitation, protecting lives at sea, and managing tensions with coastal communities.
