Conservatives propose £10bn missile defence shield

The Conservatives have pledged to invest £10 billion in a new British missile and drone defence system if they win the next general election. Named 'Britannia Shield', the proposed network would combine advanced radar, command systems, interceptor missiles and counter-drone technology to protect population centres and critical national infrastructure. Kemi Badenoch said the investment would be spread over ten years and funded through welfare reforms and spending reductions elsewhere, alongside a commitment to increase defence expenditure to 3% of GDP by 2030. The proposal responds to growing concerns about Russian drone activity, developments in modern warfare, and potential threats to British infrastructure. Defence experts welcomed greater attention to national protection but questioned whether £10 billion would provide sufficient coverage. Labour criticised the Conservatives’ previous defence record, while highlighting existing investment in Britain's Sky Sabre air defence capabilities. The announcement comes as Andy Burnham is under pressure to explain how Britain will meet its longer-term NATO defence spending commitments.
