PM tells Zelensky: 'We are behind you and that will not change'

Andy Burnham has reaffirmed Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine during talks with Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street. Welcoming the Ukrainian leader, Burnham declared, 'We are behind you and that will not change’, as Russia continued devastating attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. Overnight missile and drone strikes reportedly left at least 600,000 people without electricity. Britain announced plans to accelerate deliveries of lightweight missiles used to intercept Russian drones, as well as further military cooperation. Zelensky thanked Britain for its longstanding support, describing the British people as among Ukraine’s strongest partners. The meeting followed renewed tensions between Washington and Kyiv after Donald Trump criticised Zelensky and agreed to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports, prompting concern among European allies. Ukraine has also raised questions about possible restrictions on American intelligence-sharing and disruptions affecting military communications. Burnham avoided directly criticising Trump, emphasising the importance of rebuilding diplomatic relationships while maintaining practical support for Ukraine’s defence and pursuing opportunities for a negotiated end to the conflict.
