A group of ten Australians has lodged a complaint with UNHCR, arguing that their government's continued support for coal and gas exports is contributing to climate-related harm and violating their human rights. The case is believed to be the first brought before an international body since a 2025 International Court of Justice ruling confirmed that countries may face legal action over climate change impacts. The claim includes accounts from people affected by bushfires, floods and other extreme weather events. Among them are a volunteer firefighter who witnessed devastating bushfires, a Brisbane resident with disabilities who was trapped during severe flooding, and an Indigenous leader concerned about the loss of cultural knowledge following catastrophic floods in Western Australia. The group argues that Australia should not continue approving and supporting fossil fuel exports without a clear plan to protect people from the dangers associated with a changing climate.
