Cuba / USA: accusations of no progress in talks

Relations between Cuba and the USA are strained, as foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez says recent talks have produced no progress. Cuba says it remains open to dialogue but accuses the US of increasing economic pressure through tighter sanctions and a blockade affecting fuel supplies. The resulting shortages have contributed to prolonged power cuts, transport disruption, and growing difficulties for hospitals and other essential services. Cuban officials argue the measures are worsening humanitarian conditions, while US leaders maintain that government mismanagement is primarily responsible for the crisis. Meanwhile, Cuba has introduced limited economic reforms to encourage private enterprise and foreign investment. Rodriguez has also accused the USA of attempting to scuttle a planned debate at the UN General Assembly on 7 July to discuss Washington’s sanctions. It has been nearly five months since the island was put under the US fuel blockade; humanitarian concerns are growing amid reports of worsening healthcare, economic hardship, and declining living conditions for many families.
