Venezuela: aid badly needed as total of earthquake victims reaches 2,000

A remarkable rescue in Venezuela has brought hope after emergency teams pulled a three-year-old child alive from the rubble in La Guaira, six days after two powerful earthquakes struck less than a minute apart. The disaster has claimed nearly two thousand lives, while more than 6,400 people have been rescued. Tens of thousands remain without adequate shelter, and around a thousand buildings, including hospitals, schools and water systems, have been damaged or destroyed. UN agencies and humanitarian organisations are working alongside local authorities to provide emergency shelter, healthcare, clean water and protection for affected communities. UNICEF has delivered emergency supplies to more than 100,000 children and families, but estimates that 680,000 children across six states now require humanitarian assistance. Continuing aftershocks and limited funding are hampering relief efforts, with aid agencies appealing for increased international support to meet urgent and long-term needs.
