Sudan: ICC has ‘concrete evidence’ of war crimes committed by RSF

The International Criminal Court (ICC) says it has obtained what it describes as concrete evidence linking leaders of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur. According to the ICC’s deputy chief prosecutor, the investigation has reached a significant breakthrough after gathering witness testimony, photographs, videos and forensic evidence relating to atrocities in several cities. The UN says thousands of people were killed during the fighting in el-Fasher, while many more were forced to flee their homes. The RSF denies carrying out widespread killings or targeting civilians on an ethnic basis, although it acknowledges that some violations may have occurred and says it is conducting its own investigation. The ICC has investigated alleged crimes in Darfur for more than two decades and says it remains committed to pursuing accountability, although no timeline has been given for possible charges in the current conflict.
