South Africa: work stops at iconic diamond mine as demand plummets

De Beers has announced a two-year suspension of production at the Venetia mine, South Africa’s largest diamond mine, as the industry struggles with falling demand and declining prices. The mine produces more than 40% of South Africa’s diamonds and provides employment for over four thousand people. Industry profits have been affected by changing consumer preferences, particularly weaker demand in China, and increasing competition from lower-priced laboratory-grown diamonds. During the closure, De Beers says it will upgrade the mine’s infrastructure in preparation for a future restart when market conditions improve. The decision has renewed concerns about employment in South Africa’s mining sector, an important source of jobs and economic activity. The company, founded in 1871 by Cecil Rhodes, has a complex historical legacy linked to colonialism and continuing debates about social justice and economic inequality.
