Liberia: largest-ever cocaine seizure

Police have carried out the country’s largest-ever cocaine seizure after raiding a suspected storage facility near Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. Forensic testing has confirmed that the haul, discovered in sealed suitcases and boxes, was high-grade cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding £220 million. Several people, including two foreign nationals and a number of Liberians, were arrested as part of a long-running investigation into international drug-trafficking networks. The operation, which follows another major cocaine seizure at the international airport in June, illustrates West Africa’s role as a transit route for narcotics bound for Europe. Liberia’s president, Joseph Boakai, has reshuffled the leadership of the drug enforcement agency several times as his government faces growing pressure to tackle the problem. His vice-president, Jeremiah Koung, has vowed that whoever is found culpable will ‘feel the full weight of the law’.
