The death toll from the disaster after the MV Barima capsized off the coast of Guyana on 18 July has risen to at least 53. Seventy-six people have been rescued, while search teams continue looking for dozens who remain missing. Officials said the ferry was carrying 179 people, although only 133 names appeared on the passenger manifest, complicating rescue and identification efforts. The vessel was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when it overturned, in what authorities have described as Guyana’s worst maritime disaster in decades. Sixteen vessels, supported by French and local divers, have been deployed to the search area. Investigators are examining several possible causes, including alleged misconduct by crew members. The captain and another crew member were taken into custody after reportedly testing positive for marijuana. The tragedy has prompted renewed concern about maritime safety and accountability as grieving families await news of their missing loved ones.
