New rules have been introduced in Pakistan requiring journalists working for international media, including Pakistani nationals, to obtain official permission before reporting anywhere outside Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. The government says that these guidelines are intended to verify journalists, coordinate reporting, and improve administrative procedures rather than restrict press freedom. However, media organisations, editors and legal experts argue the measures will significantly hinder independent reporting by creating delays and uncertainty, especially during breaking news events. Critics also express concern over provisions allowing accreditation to be withdrawn for actions deemed contrary to Pakistan’s ideology, security or public order, describing the language as vague and open to broad interpretation. Journalists have warned that the new restrictions could further reduce transparency and increase opportunities for misinformation. Pakistan currently ranks 153 out of 180 on the World Press Freedom Index.
