The Israeli military has acknowledged for the first time that its troops fired at the car carrying five-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab, who was killed with six relatives in Gaza in 2024. Hind initially survived and spent hours pleading by telephone for rescuers to reach her. An ambulance dispatched by the Palestinian Red Crescent after coordination with Israeli forces was subsequently struck, killing two paramedics. The IDF has now ordered a criminal investigation into the incident, citing possible failures in coordinating the ambulance’s movement. It will also investigate the March 2025 killing of fifteen Palestinians, including emergency workers and a UN employee. The IDF says it examines exceptional incidents in accordance with international and domestic law, while Israeli rights groups argue that investigations into military personnel rarely produce indictments or substantial penalties. More than 73,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its military campaign, including about 1,200 since a ceasefire was announced last October.
