At least 47 people have been killed, more than 50 kidnapped and 22 injured in a major gang attack on Kenscoff, near Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Armed men reportedly set homes ablaze, killed residents, and targeted a church during the 23 August assault. Mayor Jean Massillon blamed members of the powerful Viv Ansanm gang alliance. UN secretary-general António Guterres condemned the violence and called for intensified Haitian and international efforts against criminal gangs. Residents have criticised the police response and demanded the local police chief’s resignation, alleging that officers failed to protect people attacked near the police station. One man said that six of his relatives were abducted, including his 16-year-old niece, who escaped after being raped. A gang leader has threatened to kill hostages if gang members are harmed. Kenscoff has endured repeated attacks since last year, displacing thousands, as armed groups seek to extend their influence beyond Port-au-Prince.
