SAT-7 has run a series of media workshops helping young Arab women from Egypt and Sudan explore gender expectations, discrimination and freedom of expression through film-making. Fifteen participants aged 18 to 21 created short films based on their own experiences, often revealing how invisibility can feel like a form of safety. Their stories addressed racism, harassment, pressure surrounding marriage, obedience and restrictions on behaviour and appearance. Project leader Maggie Morgan said many participants were surprised to discover that their experiences were worth hearing and sharing publicly. The workshops also encouraged the women to question inherited beliefs and social norms, while developing skills in storytelling, photography and film. Activities included photographing community life in Cairo and wearing clothes they genuinely loved for a public photoshoot. Organisers described the experience as empowering, showing how even small acts of self-expression can challenge shame and help participants recognise the value of their own voices.
