USA: 25 years on, 9/11 agony endures

Twenty-five years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, families of nearly three thousand victims are still waiting for the trial of alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He has been held at Guantanamo Bay for twenty years, while complex pre-trial proceedings have continued under five different military judges. A trial date has now been set for June 2028, but bereaved relatives fear further delays and worry that elderly family members may never see justice delivered. The case has been complicated significantly by the treatment of Mohammed and other suspects in secret CIA prisons, where they were subjected to interrogation methods later described by a military judge as severe abuse. Confessions made after that treatment have consequently been ruled inadmissible, creating further legal difficulties. Families remain divided over whether convictions should be secured through plea agreements or a full public trial. As America marks the 25th anniversary, relatives say the tragedy remains ever-present in their lives, even as 9/11 increasingly becomes history for younger generations.
