China’s nuclear power corporation is using artificial intelligence, robotics and digital management systems to improve construction at its latest project, in Guangdong province. The site, employing about 30,000 authorised workers, includes robot dogs which patrol for fires and unsafe practices, while AI cameras detect hazards such as missing protective equipment and entry into dangerous areas. An integrated command centre monitors workers, construction progress, equipment and environmental conditions in real time. Digital applications also assist with quality inspections, although human review remains necessary for important decisions. Automated welding has reduced staffing requirements while reportedly achieving qualification rates above 99%, compared with about 97% for manual welding. The company is also developing a digital twin of the entire site and electronic records covering the plant’s lifecycle. Six reactor units are planned, which together are expected to generate approximately 52 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually while substantially reducing carbon emissions.
