DR Congo: WHO helping to improve treatment as Ebola deaths pass 3,000

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed more than three thousand people, making it the country’s deadliest recorded outbreak. Official figures report 6,186 infections and 3,007 deaths, with 1,409 people recovering. The outbreak has now spread to six provinces, many affected by armed conflict, weak government presence and community mistrust. It is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no vaccine or treatment has yet been approved, placing severe pressure on an already under-resourced health response. The World Health Organisation is helping expand the Lita treatment centre in Ituri, adding 42 beds and improving hygiene and treatment facilities. Several vaccines and treatments are being tested, including the Ervebo vaccine normally used against the Zaire strain. More than 16,000 doses have arrived for frontline medical workers, although researchers remain uncertain how much protection it provides against Bundibugyo Ebola.
