South Africa: mass shooting, at least eleven killed

At least eleven people have been killed in a mass shooting at a house in KwaMakhutha township, near the city of Durban. Police said three gunmen armed with pistols and rifles entered the property, where fourteen people were reportedly attending a party, and opened fire. Ten victims died at the scene and another died later in hospital, while three others were receiving treatment. A pregnant woman was among those killed. Police said some victims had previously been under surveillance in connection with suspected illegal activities but declined to provide details while investigations continue. The motive remains uncertain, although investigators have not ruled out a feud between rival groups. The attackers also reportedly burned a victim’s vehicle before escaping, and police have launched a manhunt. The killings come amid continuing concern about South Africa’s high murder rate, organised crime and gang violence. South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates, with police data showing a murder rate equivalent to more than sixty deaths a day.
