The last British and American troops have left Iraq, ending the international coalition’s military mission against IS after more than a decade. About a hundred UK personnel left Irbil alongside US forces, completing a withdrawal agreed with the Iraqi government. Operation Inherent Resolve began in 2014 after IS seized extensive territory, with coalition forces helping Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga to defeat the group territorially and prevent its resurgence. Britain says its personnel trained more than 111,000 Iraqi and Kurdish forces, while the RAF struck more than 2,300 IS targets. Prime minister Ali al-Zaidi said the end of the coalition's mission marked ‘Iraq's transition to a phase in which it assumes full responsibility for its security and stability’. Iraq is set to hold four national holidays to mark the withdrawal. The USA intends to maintain targeted training and intelligence support, while coalition operations against IS will continue from elsewhere in the region, including Syria.
