Myanmar: airstrike on crowded marketplace kills at least fifty

At least fifty people have been killed and 58 injured after a military airstrike hit a busy market in a town in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state. Local aid workers said the riverside commercial centre was bombed around midday on 28 September, when it was crowded with traders and shoppers. There are fears that the final death toll could be higher. The Arakan Army, which controls most of Rakhine, said that 22 of those injured were in critical condition. The Myanmar military has not commented on the attack. Since civil war followed the 2021 military coup, the market and nearby bridge have become important for trade with India and supplies to isolated communities. Rakhine has experienced severe fighting between the military and Arakan Army, with nearly half a million people displaced. Rights organisations have previously accused military aircraft of carrying out deadly attacks against civilian locations.
