India: opposition MPs arrested briefly in demonstrations over revising election rolls

Opposition MPs have intensified protests against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his resignation over alleged malpractice in the process of revising electoral rolls. On 6 October, lawmakers led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attempted to march from parliament towards the election commission headquarters in New Delhi, but when the police stopped them near Akashvani Bhavan, the protesters staged a sit-in lasting several hours. Gandhi and other opposition MPs were later detained and subsequently released. Congress spokesman Pawan Khera said the demonstration was only the beginning and strongly criticised Kumar, Narendra Modi, and other senior figures. The opposition’s claim that the revisions to voter lists are unfairly benefiting the ruling BJP have been denied. The dispute has prompted wider demonstrations, while India’s supreme court has sought explanations from the government and election commission about the ongoing revision process.
