A powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu at 4:27pm local time on Tuesday, registering magnitude 7.1 according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (the US Geological Survey later measured it at 6.8). The earthquake has brought back painful memories of the devastating 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, which claimed 278 lives, although stronger building standards and improved emergency preparedness have helped reduce the overall impact.

At least 34 people have been confirmed dead, with many others injured and rescue operations continuing. Several people remain missing, while others have been reported in cardiopulmonary arrest, a term used in Japan before deaths are formally confirmed. More than 300,000 residents were advised to move to evacuation centres, with hundreds of soldiers deployed to assist emergency services.

The most serious incident occurred at the Aeon Shopping Mall in Kumamoto, where an explosion followed the earthquake after customers and staff had evacuated. Part of the second floor collapsed, killing several people and trapping others beneath the rubble. Search teams continue working carefully to locate survivors. At the Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro Mill, a large factory chimney collapsed, leaving workers dead, injured and missing.

Across the prefecture, roads, bridges and public infrastructure have suffered damage. Historic Kumamoto Castle, which only recently underwent restoration following the 2016 earthquakes, has again sustained damage as sections of its centuries-old stone walls collapsed. Around 40,000 homes lost electricity, transport services across Kyushu were disrupted, and several bullet trains were stranded overnight after tracks were damaged.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded more than 100 aftershocks, warning that strong tremors could continue over the coming week, particularly during the first few days. A tsunami advisory for nearby Ariake Bay was issued immediately after the earthquake but was lifted within two hours without significant coastal impact.

Japan's response has once again demonstrated remarkable organisation, discipline and resilience. Emergency services, Self-Defence Forces and local communities continue working tirelessly to rescue survivors, restore essential services and care for thousands displaced from their homes as the nation faces another difficult chapter in its long history of living with powerful earthquakes.
