Christian nurse Razia Noreen has been hailed a national hero in Pakistan after risking her life to save an infant from a devastating fire that killed fourteen newborns at a hospital in Islamabad on 26 August (see). Noreen managed to rescue one of fifteen babies in the nursery. Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif awarded her the Sitara-i-Khidmat (Star of Service) and a cash prize of ten million rupees (about $35,850), praising her 'exemplary responsibility and bravery’. Noreen said she was simply doing her duty, adding she was devastated she could not save the others. Christian leaders across Pakistan praised her selfless act as an example of Christ's love; one of them said she had shown 'the true meaning of living as a follower of Christ.' Sharif has suspended eight hospital officials and ordered criminal proceedings against those found negligent.
