Christian organisations are calling on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to safeguard freedom of religion and expression amid concerns that recent legislation could increasingly restrict the public expression of Christian beliefs. Writing for Spiked, The Christian Institute’s director, Ciarán Kelly, highlighted concerns over abortion buffer zone laws and proposals for a ban on so-called conversion therapy. He argued that some interpretations of existing legislation could unintentionally criminalise activities such as open-air preaching, pastoral conversations, or chaplains praying with grieving families near hospitals. Christian groups have also expressed concern that future conversion therapy legislation could affect parents, pastors, and others offering biblical guidance or prayer to those who voluntarily seek spiritual support. Kelly acknowledged that the current government inherited many of these issues but argued that its response will be an important test of its commitment to protecting religious liberty while addressing genuinely harmful practices. The debate reflects wider questions about balancing freedom of expression, pastoral care, public order, and the rights of all members of society.
